Lipstick Case: Depotting

Carrying around lipsticks has ALWAYS been a struggle for me. Since I am a professional make up artist, I would open every lipstick one-by-one and show my clients the colors. I knew I had to find an easier way to show my clients all of the colors. The single lipsticks also take up a lot of room in my kit. I decided to depot the lipsticks! This was my first attempt at doing this and I must say, it was quite simple and easy. I wish I had taken pictures of the process but it was 11:00 pm and the lighting was horrible. I also didn’t think anyone would want to know about depotting but when I showed Harleen my little DIY project, she loved it!

 You will need:

1) Q-tips

2) Rubbing Alcohol

3) Empty palette (mine is from MAC)

4) Palette insert (mine is from MAC)

5) Beauty spatula or flat knife

6) Washi tape or stickers

7) Sharpie or pen

I started depotting directly into the inserts because if you place the insert in the palette first and then try to depot the lipsticks, it gets a little messy. The inserts come in 12 wells and 24 wells. I got the one with 12 wells because I could easily fit an entire lipstick into that well without overflowing. My MAC palette is magnetic and very inexpensive. I got the double sided one so that when I open the palette, I can see everything and I am able to use both sides; so in one palette I can fit 24 lipsticks.

Step 1: Clean the inserts with rubbing alcohol.

Step 2: Separate the lipsticks by color (reds, pinks, nudes, etc)

Step 3: Open the lipstick entirely and cut it with a knife from the very bottom where the lipstick ends and simply put it into an insert. It helps to have the lipstick at room temperature.

Step 4: Smash the lipstick into the insert carefully, smoothing it out.

Step 5: Go back to the lipstick and scrape out the remaining lipstick, which is quite a bit!

Step 6: Do this with the rest of the lipsticks

Step 7: Use the Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol to clean the edges of the inserts in just case you got some lipsticks outside of the borders.

Step 8: Pop the insert into the palette

Step 9: On the outside of the palette, you can write the lipstick names with washi tape or stickers and you’re DONE!
